A Backyard Tourist Stop Worth Adding to Your Starved Rock Road Trip
By Kelly Klobucher
Tucked along the Illinois River between Ottawa and Starved Rock Country, Marseilles, Illinois may be one of the smallest communities in the area, but it’s well worth a stop if you appreciate scenic river views, local history, and authentic small-town charm.

One of the town’s most meaningful landmarks is the Middle East Conflicts Memorial Wall, located along the riverfront. Dedicated to the men and women who served in military conflicts from 1979 to the present, it is one of the few memorials of its kind in the nation. Set against the backdrop of the Illinois River, it offers a peaceful place to reflect while honoring the sacrifices of those who served.

The riverfront is also one of the area’s best places for bald eagle watching during the winter months. As temperatures drop, eagles gather along the open waters of the Illinois River, making Marseilles a favorite destination for photographers, birdwatchers, and anyone who appreciates seeing one of America’s most majestic birds in its natural habitat.

If you’re looking to stretch your legs, head over to Illini State Park. The park offers wooded hiking trails, picnic areas, campsites, and beautiful overlooks of the Illinois River. Whether you’re planning a weekend camping trip or simply enjoying an afternoon outdoors, it’s a relaxing place to experience the natural beauty of the Illinois Valley.
Of course, no visit to LaSalle County is complete without embracing the local food culture—and that often means something fried.

When hunger strikes, pull up a chair at the Illini Lounge, a local favorite known for hearty portions, friendly service, and exactly the kind of comfort food that fuels a day of exploring. Crispy fried favorites, cold drinks, and a welcoming atmosphere make it a classic small-town stop.

After all, around here, we like to joke that things are done “LaSalle County style”—which often means if it can be fried, it’s probably on the menu!
Marseilles may not be the biggest destination in Starved Rock Country, but that’s part of its appeal. It’s a place where you can honor our veterans, watch bald eagles soar above the Illinois River, hike through a scenic state park, and finish the day with a basket of fried comfort food—all at a pace that reminds you why small-town road trips are so rewarding.
Sometimes the best discoveries aren’t the places with the biggest crowds. They’re the communities that quietly invite you to slow down, look around, and enjoy the journey.

Backyard Tourist Tip: Pair Marseilles with visits to nearby Ottawa, Utica, Starved Rock State Park, or Matthiessen State Park for a full weekend exploring the history, nature, and flavors of LaSalle County. It makes a great side quest off Route 66!
